Small Batch, Big Warmth at Sidecar Roasters

There are cafés that serve coffee, and then there are places that make you want to stay. Sidecar Roasters, on Maitland Street in Branxton, is firmly the latter. And in winter, it becomes something even more compelling.

The building itself sets the tone. Housed in a former motor garage, the space has retained its industrial bones while evolving into something warm and considered. On a cold morning, the smell of beans roasting on-site wraps around you before you even reach the counter. This is not coffee that has travelled far – it is roasted here, in small batches, by people who are paying very close attention to what ends up in your cup. That process - visible, intentional, unhurried - is part of what makes the experience feel different from the moment you walk in.

Sidecar was founded in 2021 by three longtime mates - Mike Raper, Ben Greenslade-Stanton and Marty Farrugia - who brought two decades of friendship and a background in Sydney's music scene to the Hunter Valley. That creative sensibility shows up in everything from the curated playlists to the rotating art exhibitions that line the walls. Out in the peagravel courtyard, a billboard-sized artwork by Australian artist Shaun Gladwell adds an unexpected gallery moment to what might otherwise be just a coffee stop.

Caffeine+Contrast presents Australian and International photographers in a rotating exhibition series built around bold imagery, fresh perspectives and visual conversation. Photography, coffee and culture sharing the same walls.

Projection transforms the roastery into an evolving gallery space, showcasing contemporary screen-based works from Australian and international artists. Extending in tandem with our external billboard, the series creates a dialogue between interior and public space through light, movement and visual storytelling unfolding beside the roaster.

The coffee itself rewards the visit. Beans are sourced globally and roasted on-site with precision, offering bold single origins for those who like to explore and approachable blends for those who simply want a great cup done well. The Enigma Blend - Sidecar's signature - is now also available in Nespresso-compatible capsules, small-batch and Hunter Valley roasted, making it easy to take a little of that Branxton warmth home with you. It is the kind of thing you keep for yourself and gift to people you really like.

A thoughtful food offering rounds out the experience, with everything on the menu designed to complement rather than compete with the coffee. Whether you are after a quiet winter morning to yourself, a reason to linger over a long catch-up, or simply a stop that makes the drive through Branxton feel worthwhile, Sidecar delivers on all counts. Sidecar Roasters is located at 59 Maitland Street, Branxton.
