Despite these setbacks, on January 1st, 1913, the Newcastle Ocean Baths opened to the public for the first time, even though the facilities weren't fully complete. Construction of the pavilion began in 1922, and the baths were officially opened on November 25, 1922, creating the architectural masterpiece we see today.

Special Features: The pools are connected by a wooden catwalk that you can walk the length of, and there's even a concrete pad known as "the Butcher's Block" for the kids to swim to and jump off. Massive tiered steps provide excellent spots for sunbathing and taking in the spectacular ocean views.

During swimming season, lifeguards are on duty at Newcastle Ocean Baths from 9 April 2024 to 27 September 2024 – 8 am to 4.30 pm, providing additional safety and peace of mind for swimmers.

Newcastle Ocean Baths has undergone extensive renovations to ensure it remains a world-class facility for future generations. Following completion of Stage One, the pool re-opened for swimming on Thursday, 21 December 2023.
The renovations have focused on improving safety and accessibility for all users while carefully preserving the site's historic character.
The final design for Stage One was finalised in August 2021, incorporating the art-deco inspired circular stairs, bleachers and retaining the popular boardwalk, ensuring that the beloved features that make Newcastle Ocean Baths special continue to delight visitors.
